<p>The American Academy is looking for a Director of Curriculum and Instruction to join our team. The chosen candidate will be responsible for the implementation of the curriculum projects; hiring, training, and managing online instructors; resolving content and instructional issues; and supporting state approval and accreditation activities.</p>
<p>Our ideal candidate has online high school teaching or administration experience, with an interest in open content and instructional best practices.</p>
<p>This is a full-time position located at our school office in Salt Lake City, Utah. Compensation is $55-70k annually, plus performance-based bonuses up to $20k per year.</p>
<p>Key Responsibilities:</p>
<p>*Interview, hire, train, and manage online instructors.<br />
*Develop and implement teacher personal professional development plans and evaluations.<br />
*Work with the CAO to plan and implement various curriculum projects, including the organization and development of digital assets.<br />
*Manage standards alignment and course approval processes.<br />
*Participate in accreditation activities.<br />
*Serve as an escalation point for Student Services to resolve content and instructional issues.</p>
<p>Desired Experience and Requirements:</p>
<p>*Minimum BS or BA from a 4-year college or university<br />
*Minimum 2-year stay at all previous employment<br />
*2-3 years experience in online high school teaching and/or administration required<br />
*Persuasive and engaging written and oral communication skills<br />
*Curiosity and good listening skills are critical. Ability to adapt to different social styles over the phone.<br />
*Excellent organizational skills, ability to prioritize, multi-task and work independently<br />
*Working knowledge of web-based applications for online learning, including learning environments and web-based development tools. Proficiency in Microsoft Office or equivalent.</p>

In addition, this position provides assistance with technical infrastructure, leadership, funding, accountability and public awareness components of the Louisiana State Plan for Educational Technology and the federal mandates of the Enhancing Education through Technology title of No Child Left Behind legislation, all of which are characterized by high-level technical and programmatic impact. <p>Gifted LearningLinks, the online program of the Center for Talent Development at Northwestern University is looking part-time instructors to teach Honors World History and AP European History beginning with the new 2009-10 academic year, which starts on September 15, 2009.</p>
<p>Gifted LearningLinks instructors create and deliver their own syllabus based on our template using the Blackboard system. Our honors and advanced placement courses are open to qualified students in grades 6-12. Courses are open for enrollment monthly and run for nine months. They are based on a facilitated independent study model, which allows students to interact with each other and their instructor, while providing the flexibility to move through the course at their own pace.</p>
<p>Preferred qualifications include content area expertise at the high school level, online teaching experience and some knowledge and experience working with academically talented students.</p>

<p><strong>Description: </strong><br />
This position will support Aventa, IQ Academies, and/or Keystone curriculum and students.</p>
<p>Applicant must possess a middle grades or secondary state teaching certification in the subject and grade-level he or she is teaching, in addition to a computer with the appropriate Internet connectivity and software.</p>
<p><strong>Specific Responsibilities: </strong><br />
The Teacher will teach courses following a proactive instructional methodology, such as:</p>
<p>Contact each new student to welcome them to the course.<br />
Contact each new mentor to introduce yourself and provide any additional information about course requirements/expectations.<br />
Contact individual students who are inactive for a period of 7 or more days.<br />
Contact the mentor if a student is inactive for a period of 7 days or more.<br />
Closely monitor student progress relative to their individual course schedule.<br />
Monitor end dates to ensure students are staying on track in the course and proactively contact the student and mentor if concerns arise or if an extension is recommended.<br />
Provide motivating, timely, and constructive feedback for student assignments.<br />
Provide motivating comments and constructive feedback for each assessment item.<br />
Maintain a safe learning environment.<br />
Follow acceptable use policy and FERPA guidelines.<br />
Evaluate all subjective assessments (homework assignments as well as subjective exam components) and assign an appropriate grade to each within 72 hours of student submission.<br />
Ensure that final grades are issued in a timely manner when a student completes a course, within 5 days of when the student&#8217;s last assignment was submitted or when his or her end date has passed.<br />
Communicate effectively with students and mentors at different technology skill levels to support instruction and advance educational goals.<br />
Hold weekly instructional synchronous chats (1 hour session per week) via Elluminate and ensure that students unable to attend these sessions have access to recorded meetings.<br />
Provide useful information to students to support success in each course by updating the course home/syllabus area in each course section at a minimum to ensure that it includes a complete syllabus, an explanation of course policies, grading policies, staff information, contact information, and other appropriate information needed as students take the course.<br />
Respond to student and mentor inquiries, questions and requests for help within 24 hours of receipt, regardless of the medium (email, phone call, etc.)<br />
Demonstrate the proper and proficient distribution of announcements and updating these regularly (at least weekly) so that enrolling students feel welcomed and part of the course.<br />
Manage and communicate effectively via the telephone, email, and Message Center.<br />
Demonstrate the proper use of voice mail (if applicable).<br />
Manage and communicate effectively via the discussion board.<br />
Demonstrate the proper use of the discussion board, create forums, ensure students stay on topic, and maintain a collaborative environment.<br />
Demonstrate sufficient use of a Web browser and search engine to locate and evaluate technology-based educational sites that support the instruction and enhance interactivity. Demonstrate proficient distribution of websites.<br />
Work with other staff and faculty in a cooperative, professional manner.<br />
Effectively review courses on an as-needed basis to ensure accurate and current content/assessments.<br />
Collaborate with staff, teachers and/or course writers on an as-needed basis in order to enhance the curriculum.<br />
Actively monitor and participate in the Teacher Resource Center and Online Instruction Community, including actively engaging in discussion groups for teachers and others teaching courses and contributing ideas and resources.<br />
Serve as a master teacher to other teachers teaching courses (if applicable).<br />
Participate in faculty meetings, department meetings, APÒ trainings (including summer institutes if applicable), hardware, software and/or educational training sessions as scheduled.<br />
Provide at least two weeks notice before taking any vacation consisting of three or more days off.<br />
Keep accurate, organized records.<br />
Maintain educationally sound rubrics and apply them to the grading process.<br />
Demonstrate ability to record and submit time via Journyx on a weekly basis.<br />
Pursue professional development opportunities.<br />
Satisfy all continuing educational requirements as dictated by state teaching certification.</p>

<p>NOTE: We are hiring teachers in our Columbia, MD location for the following subject areas: Math, English, Social Studies, Science</p>
<p>The full time instructor is responsible for implementing appropriate teaching and grading strategies that assist each student in achieving his/her academic potential while also providing superior customer service to all internal and external customers.</p>
<p>Typical activities include:<br />
• Assists the Department Chairs with development of the annual strategic process for the respective department.<br />
• Paces assigned students according to school pacing plans to maintain student retention<br />
• Grades student work as prescribed by KVE using pedagogical strategies and established KVE grading rubrics that contribute to a climate where students are “actively engaged” in meaningful learning experiences.<br />
• Works with principal and other KVE instructors to produce learning experiences suited to the grade level and to the student developmental level that will enhance student achievement.<br />
• Maintains appropriate levels of phone contact with students and parents.<br />
• Provides feedback on graded assignments, in which students are encouraged to be actively engaged in the learning process.<br />
• Uses effective written communication skills with students on a regular basis.<br />
• Models professional and ethical standards when dealing with students, parents and community.<br />
• Reviews contemporary educational literature to remain current with information related to job responsibility.<br />
• Responds promptly (within same day or 24 hours) when returning telephone calls and replying to correspondence, emails, instant messages, and faxes.<br />
• Meets established deadlines.<br />
• Conform with and abide by KVE regulations, policies, work procedures and instructions.</p>
<p>A likely activities breakdown (must equal 100%):</p>
<p>• Provides instruction to students in subject area(s) including grading 60%<br />
• Manages student/parent experience which includes student pace management 25%<br />
• Liaising with department, teachers, and principal on school and student issues 10%<br />
• Preparing reports and maintaining standard operating procedures 5%<br />
Experience Required:<br />
• A minimum of a bachelor’s degree with a major in education and subject area.<br />
• Teacher certification in subject area.<br />
• Prior teaching experience is desired.<br />
