The University of the Pacific has an excellent opportunity for a university-wide Instructional Designer and Coordinator of E-Learning Initiatives. This position is within the Center for Professional and Continuing Education reporting directly to the Associate Provost for Professional and Continuing Education working closely with the Assistant Provost for Faculty Development and the Faculty Center staff. The successful candidate will provide instructional design support for hybrid and fully online courses and programs to be delivered both domestically and internationally. He/She will work with subject matter experts to design, develop and deliver courses that include best practices for academic and training formats integrating multiple technologies and incorporating new media such as audio, video and interactive media. The successful candidate will also coordinate university e-learning initiatives lending guidance and expertise based on online and traditional teaching and learning research.

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERTISE:

Applicants should have a minimum of three years experience in online instructional design including the integration of technology into both face-to-face and online instruction at the university or comparable level; a Bachelor of Science degree in instructional design, curriculum and instruction, multimedia education, education with online teaching emphasis, or educational technology; an appropriate graduate degree is preferred. Valid driver’s license and eligibility to be insured by the University of the Pacific. Knowledge of instructional design theories, pedagogical methods, and online/hybrid teaching strategies; familiarity with accessibility guidelines and copyright laws; demonstrated ability using academic technology teaching strategies, such as: instant messaging, discussions, web conferencing, blogs, podcasting, wikis, social networking, surveys, exams, and assignments as evidenced by the presentation of a portfolio demonstrating ability to develop courses, best practices, training resources, etc. is required. Ideal candidate will possess strong interpersonal, leadership, teamwork and organizational skills; have experience designing and delivering programs and courses for the international marketplace; and have experience working with adult learner programs in a professional and continuing education environment.

Job Title: iEARN-USA Online Course Instructional Designer
Start Date: October 30, 2009 – Conditional on Grant Funding

Responsibilities:
The Instructional Designer will have overall responsibility for designing and implementing two new online professional development courses to prepare K-12 educators worldwide to integrate new technology and collaboration tools into the classroom. Job responsibilities include: collaborating with iEARN professional development and technology staff, as well as representatives of a major software company providing new technology tools to design and build courses that will prepare educators to use these tools; developing and offering professional development training to potential online course facilitators and discussion leaders; collaborating with iEARN technical staff on online enrollment and administration of the two courses, which may have up to 100,000 educator participants; and working with iEARN staff and representatives of the software company to evaluate and develop a certification process for educators successfully completing the courses.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Instructional systems or field related to educational technology. Master’s degree in Instructional Systems, Education, Communications or related field preferred.

• Proficiencies in the Moodle CMS and multimedia authoring software such as HTML, PowerPoint, Macromedia Dreamweaver, Flash, Photoshop, and Windows Microsoft Office required.

• In-depth and demonstrated knowledge, understanding and application of instructional design theory and principles, learning theory, instructional technology, and adult online learning.

• Ability to apply principles of effective client consultation and team processes.

• Ability to complete projects within a specified timeline while working on multiple projects simultaneously.

• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

• Experience with course management software (e.g., Moodle) and with development of online courses

• Familiarity with basic technologies used for instruction and training as well as ability to quickly learn new software tools for enhancing teaching and learning in the classroom.

• Awareness of accessibility considerations in instructional design.

• Interest in international education, preferably involving interactive Internet-based technologies

• Flexibility

• Proven administrative skills

• Sense of humor

Manager of Curriculum, Insight Schools

SUMMARY: Under limited supervision, this position is responsible for developing, implementing and maintaining curriculum offerings/instructional practices that support high levels of student achievement.

PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

1. Manages the development of curriculum offerings that meet the needs of students and instructors as well as support organizational goals and objectives for both public and private high school environments.

2. Evaluates potential changes, additions, and deletions to online course catalog and solicits feedback regarding potential changes.

3. Directs and oversees course creation, editing and revision activities of instructors, online course developers, and subject matter experts.

4. Oversees and manages the alignment of course content with state standards and creates a standard evaluation instrument for online instructors.

5. Reviews, selects, and licenses curriculum from multiple vendors; reviews a variety of instructional tools available to instructors.

6. Works with vendors to evaluate their course offerings and instructional tools.

7. Evaluates third-party offerings and services for inclusion in program offerings and conducts “build vs. buy” analyses when creating course catalogs to determine whether the organization will create a course internally or license from third parties.

8. Collaborates with all stakeholders to create materials for teacher professional development and training sessions.

9. Develops curriculum and support tools for ESL and Special Education students.

10. Performs other duties as assigned or apparent.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

Includes direct supervision of assigned team members; may also directly supervise clerical staff as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

A thorough knowledge of curriculum and instructional design as normally obtained through the completion of a Master’s degree in education or a related field, or through professional experience. Teaching or school administration experience preferred. K-12 experience is highly preferred.

Management and leadership experience in a business environment; experience in a for-profit education environment, a content company, publishing company, tutoring services business, or similar experience is preferred.

Must be able to demonstrate a high level of conceptual and strategic thinking and attention to detail in order to establish, goals, objectives, activities, policies and procedures, as described above.

Must be able to demonstrate an understanding of the impact growth and scale have on operational processes.

TRAVEL: Some travel required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work is generally performed in an office environment in which there is only minimal exposure to unpleasant and/or hazardous working conditions. Must have the ability to stand and sit frequently throughout an eight-hour period, reach vertically for overhead use as well as horizontally. Must be able to use a telephone or headset equipment. Incumbent must be able to lift 20 lbs., perform work at a computer terminal for 6-8 hours a day, and function in an environment with constant interruptions.
